This model has evolved in collaboration with Facing Australia, participants, arts workers, curators and cultural venue representatives in order to achieve successful outcomes throughout the project.
The first phase of the project involves a series of discussions with the funding partners and the Facing Australia team. A range of issues are discussed and the time-frame established. All this can easily occur by telephone and by E mail.
In Phase 2 Facing Australia analyses relevant ABS census data and produces a guide for the on-site organizers to recruit the participants. Fifty male and fifty female participants are required.
Phase 3 participants are recruited and given a time, date and venue for their photographic session
Phase 4 is exciting. This is when the participants are photographed. To photograph 100 people, two days are required. Two photographs are required of each participant, one straight (a 'mona lisa' expression) the other with a more natural expression. Digital equipment is used allowing the participants the opportunity to view their portraits immediately on screen. Experience has shown that this part of the project is enjoyed by all participants because they interact with the Facing Australia team and the other participants. It should noted that this a prime opportunity to promote the project via a range of media outlets or to add other elements to the project such as the recording and collection of oral histories.
Phase 5 the Facing Australia team digitally composite the individual photographs and produce a series of files ready for printing.
The final phase is the public exhibition of the work. Research has revealed that in most cases the participants who are recruited for the project have never or have rarely attended a cultural venue. The exhibition is the catalyst that introduces these individuals, their family and friends to a cultural venue - Facing Australia fosters audience development. The participants also collect their copy of their portrait at the opening of the exhibition.

Output of the composites is one of the exciting phases of the project and there are several ways in which to approach it. For example the images can be exhibited in a formal manner and exhibited in an exhibition space alternatively printed on a vinyl material and displayed in an external setting. We are interested in pursuing a range of options with the commissioning party in order to maximize audience participation.
